Over the last week I have began the sketching process. Some of the sketch scans can be viewed under the “Sketches” tab of this blog. As discussed in previous posts, I have chosen to use the toolkit as the main user design tool. The scenarios developed by the user can then be document and elaborated upon further by the designer using the sketching process. Due to the delay in the construction of the toolkit I have only been able to generate scenarios from one member of the DSE. However, over the holiday period I will use the toolkit with numerous more people at the DSE to generate alot more user scenarios. I will then continue the sketching process. By week 1 of semester 2 I aim to have a solid direction for my design, allowing me to hit the ground running.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been working on the development of the 3D participatory toolkit. This took a lot longer then anticipated as I had to make the chassis from MDF as opposed to acrylic. The MDF required finishing and with the weather being so cold the painting seemed to take for ever. Anyway the toolkit is now complete and ready to be used as a project ideation tool. Due to the toolkit taking so long to make I was unable to get the toolkit to those at the Mansfield DSE in time to present the findings in my DVR. This part of the process has been pushed back to next week over the holidays. However as documented in my DVR I was fortunate enough to have Greg Purcell of the Mansfield DSE visit this week. He his a family friend as well as a work college hence why he dropped in. He was able to generate a number of scenarios in which i was able to used to inform the beginning of my sketching process. The toolkit worked extremely well and received positive feedback from Greg. Images of the toolkit are filed under the “3D Participatory Toolkit” tab of my blog.

Above are images of the 2:1 mdf protoype. The other two line images are the laser files for the refined design.

For the final toolkit I intend to construct the chassis out of mdf and the tray and accesories out of 3mm acrylic. I initially intended to do the lot out of acrylic but am unable to obtain an appropiate colour in the right size sheet. As an alternative I will use 9mm MDF and paint the chassis up. Overall the design as been refined to be more interlocking (for ease of joing)  and the tool box has been made more customisable. This has been done by providing the user with a range of different seperating inserts. This tool box will be made using a transparent acrylic. I will also experiment with the idea of etching a lego pattern onto the tray base so that lego blocks for the slip on unit can be attached. I have created the patteren on CAD. Therotically it should work but my design has to be millimeter perfect.

I think that’s all… I still aim to have the toolkit completed by this weekend. If all goes well I’m off to visit the parents in Mansfield this weekend so I will be able to give the toolkit a run with my work collegues at DSE.
